You already know that solar panels convert the sun’s energy into electricity. Considering how hard solar panels work to generate endless amount of energy, it goes without saying that they require some TLC. As the industry experts will have you know, to harness maximum solar energy, solar panels should be kept clean and dirt-free. Taking good care of your solar panels will ensure that they function effectively throughout their lifespan.

Here are a few tips that will help your solar panels stay in tip top shape for years to come:

Perform Regular Inspection

Solar panels are placed in high locations, on rooftops. These areas are prone to weather damage as well as accumulation of dirt and debris that come with strong winds. Make sure your solar panels don’t sustain any damage by inspecting them on a frequent basis. Clean up the dirt, dust, pollen, etc. that gets accumulated over the panels to ensure there is no power loss.

Clean the Solar Panels Properly

Solar panels are made of glass, which means they are easy to clean. You can use a soft, clean cloth to wipe the panels and remove the dirt, dust, snow, and other buildup. Do not use detergent-based cleaners as they can leave smudges and streaks, reducing the sunlight that passes through. To get rid of stubborn dirt or oily residue, you can use a mixture of rubbing alcohol and water.

Check the Panel Components Regularly

When you are cleaning the solar panels, take a look around the mounting rack, components and wiring. Check for any signs of drainage issues, leaks, or water damage around the panels. Also check for frayed wiring, broken glass, and missing bolts. An early inspection will help prevent small issues from turning into costlier repairs. If you notice any problems described above, contact your solar contractor right away and get them fixed.

Keep An Eye On Energy Consumption

The easiest way to ensure your entire solar panel system is performing effectively is to install an energy monitor. These monitoring systems typically provide output data on their app or website. This way, you can check the production totals generated by each panel.

This is quite a handy feature when you are trying to spot any “dead” panels that aren’t generating electricity. It can happen due to an issue with the connection between the inverter and the panel, or with the panel itself.

If you notice an unexpected loss in electricity production, report it immediately to your solar panel installer and set up an inspection. Using these preventative maintenance tips will help increase the efficiency and longevity of your solar panels.
